We are hiring a Principal Software Engineer in Glasgow to help build the software behind Ultra Edge®
For decades, power and control systems have been built for the worst millisecond, not the average second — over-sized, over-built, and running at half-throttle. weeteq is changing that. Our Ultra Edge® platform predicts and controls the transient, handing back the headroom that every system has been forced to leave on the table. This is a chance to own the software that makes it happen.
The role
This is a senior, hands-on leadership role. As Principal Software Engineer you set the technical direction for our software, lead the engineers who build it, and own the development process end to end: from architecture through delivery on silicon-close, real-time systems.
You will architect the firmware and SDK for multiple third-party and weeteq MCUs, designing the timing and telemetry pipelines that manage hardware-level state transitions and system-level optimisation under dynamic AI workloads. You will lead the development of highly optimised RTOS environments, build the APIs required for system-level integration, and drive pre-silicon validation on FPGA.
Leading the software, owning the process
- Set technical direction — own the software architecture and engineering standards across embedded, real-time and ML-on-device workstreams, and make the hard trade-off calls.
- Lead the engineers — mentor and technically line-manage a growing software team, setting the bar for quality and growing people into their next level.
- Be the senior voice — represent software in leadership decisions, roadmap planning and technical due diligence with customers, partners and investors.
- Own how we build — establish and continuously improve the full development lifecycle, from coding standards and code review to CI/CD, testing and release.
- Deliver hands-on — this is a principal role, not a detached one: you stay close to the code, unblock the team, and personally own the hardest problems.
What you will work on
- Ultra-lightweight microkernel RTOS environments (Zephyr / FreeRTOS) tuned for sub-millisecond loops, with hard real-time, zero-jitter scheduling.
- Low-latency telemetry pipelines capturing voltage, current and temperature at microsecond intervals, and interrupt-driven firmware that responds to sudden events under dynamic AI loads.
- Predictive power management that keeps systems inside their thermal and power envelopes to prevent throttling.
- Hardware-in-the-loop firmware and pre-silicon validation on FPGA emulation platforms, working alongside our digital design team before tape-out.
What you bring
- Technical leadership — you set direction, lead engineers and own delivery end to end.
- Depth — expert-level C / C++ for resource-constrained, real-time targets, with a strong grasp of DSP, control systems or on-device ML.
- RTOS mastery — experienced in writing custom drivers, memory management and thread schedulers in Zephyr, FreeRTOS or proprietary real-time microkernels.
- Systems thinking — comfortable working silicon-close, across the hardware and software boundary, from concept to chip.
- AI infrastructure knowledge — familiar with the power profiles, sideband management needs and OCP standards governing AI accelerator clusters and GPUs.
